A food forest contributes to a diet with more organic options.
Permaculture design embraces food forests which have horizontal layers such as the canopy and a vertical layer such as vines.
You might find the following plants in a Rhode Island food forest. These are all routinely available through many garden suppliers.
In areas with an annual rainfall of between 15 and 55 inches, you might find the Jerusalem artichoke, which is Native to RI.
Known as having a High drought tolerance, the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus) is in the Aster family. It requires a minimum temperature of -43°F.
The fruit/seed period of the Jerusalem artichoke runs from Summer to Fall. It si propogated by Seed, Tubers and has a bloom period in Late Summer.
Not every plant species listed as a food forest candidate in Rhode Island will thrive in your specific climate or area.
Take a weekend trip to your local garden supply store and learn more about which plants, shrubs and ground cover will be a great fit for your food forest.
We want to hear from you! Show us your awesome food forest by submitting a photo and we may feature your paradise!
