About Chicken

Ground beef is great in tacos, pasta sauces and meatballs, but it can be high in fat for everyday eating. Try replacing it with organic ground chicken in your favorite recipes for a lighter meal. You can even do a mixture of the two meats.

Your Ohio Food Forest

Your garden can supply an abundance of food – seeds, nuts, fruits and more compromise a “food forest”.   A food forest is a multi-layered composition of food-producing plants.  It is ideally low-maintenance and produces a wealth of edibles.

Want to eat more organic food? A food forest is a great way to do that.

Permaculture design identifies seven layers in a food forest, from the tallest trees in the canopy continuing down below the soil layer.

There are many varieties of plants that are routinely available in Ohio garden centers, including a few examples below.

The bitternut hickory has a Mid Spring bloom period. Propogated by Bare root, Container, Seed, the fruit/seed period of the bitternut hickory lasts from Summer to Fall.

Surviving in temperatures above -47°F, the bitternut hickory is in the Walnut family. It’s scientific name is Carya cordiformis, and it has a High drought tolerance.

The bitternut hickory requires between 25 and 70 inches of rain per annum. It is Native to OH.

While a plant may be listed as fruit-bearing in Ohio, you might not have the best growing conditions in your specific area.

Talking to your local garden supplier is a great way to learn more about the plants, shrubs and ground species that will be the perfect fit for your new food forest.

Are you growing an awesome food forest? Submit a picture and we may feature you on this site.
