Organic Food Growing in New Mexico

Trees, shrubs and ground plants can be combined in a low-maintenance garden settings to produce edible food for the kitchen.  Seeds, nuts, fruits and herbs can be harvested from a multi-layered food forest.

A food forest contributes to a diet with more organic options.

Permaculture design embraces food forests which have horizontal layers such as the canopy and a vertical layer such as vines.

You might find the following plants in a New Mexico food forest. These are all routinely available through many garden suppliers.

Known as having a High drought tolerance, the grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor ssp. bicolor) is in the Grass family. It requires a minimum temperature of 47°F.

The fruit/seed period of the grain sorghum runs from Summer to Fall. It si propogated by Seed and has a bloom period in Late Summer.

In areas with an annual rainfall of between 18 and 60 inches, you might find the grain sorghum, which is Introduced to NM.

Not every plant species listed as a food forest candidate in New Mexico will thrive in your specific climate or area.

Take a weekend trip to your local garden supply store and learn more about which plants, shrubs and ground cover will be a great fit for your food forest.
