A member of the Rose family, the common name for Crataegus viridis is green hawthorn. Requiring a minimum temperature of -24°F, it has a Low tolerance of drought.
Native to NC, the green hawthorn is common in food forests. It grows in areas with a minimum of 36 inches of annual rainfall.
You may live in a micro-climate or area of North Carolina where some species don’t thrive or fruit.
Be sure to consult your neighborhood garden supply store and read more online to find the plants, shrubs and ground cover that work for your food forest.
