Permaculture design embraces food forests which have horizontal layers such as the canopy and a vertical layer such as vines.

You might find the following plants in a North Carolina food forest. These are all routinely available through many garden suppliers.

Known as having a High drought tolerance, the sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is in the Grass family. It requires a minimum temperature of 47°F.

In areas with an annual rainfall of between 18 and 60 inches, you might find the sorghum, which is Introduced to NC.

The fruit/seed period of the sorghum runs from Summer to Fall. It si propogated by Seed and has a bloom period in Late Summer.

Not every plant species listed as a food forest candidate in North Carolina will thrive in your specific climate or area.

Take a weekend trip to your local garden supply store and learn more about which plants, shrubs and ground cover will be a great fit for your food forest.
