The shagbark hickory has a Late Spring bloom period. Propogated by Bare root, Container, Seed, the fruit/seed period of the shagbark hickory lasts from Summer to Fall.

The shagbark hickory requires between 29 and 80 inches of rain per annum. It is Native to MN.

Surviving in temperatures above -40°F, the shagbark hickory is in the Walnut family. It’s scientific name is Carya ovata, and it has a Medium drought tolerance.

While a plant may be listed as fruit-bearing in Minnesota, you might not have the best growing conditions in your specific area.

Talking to your local garden supplier is a great way to learn more about the plants, shrubs and ground species that will be the perfect fit for your new food forest.
