Permaculture design embraces food forests which have horizontal layers such as the canopy and a vertical layer such as vines.
You might find the following plants in a Kansas food forest. These are all routinely available through many garden suppliers.
In areas with an annual rainfall of between 7 and 55 inches, you might find the netleaf hackberry, which is Native to KS.
Known as having a High drought tolerance, the netleaf hackberry (Celtis laevigata var. reticulata) is in the Elm family. It requires a minimum temperature of -42°F.
The fruit/seed period of the netleaf hackberry runs from Spring to Fall. It si propogated by Bare root, Container, Cuttings, Seed and has a bloom period in Mid Spring.
Not every plant species listed as a food forest candidate in Kansas will thrive in your specific climate or area.
