About Chicken

There is a healthier alternative to typical fried chicken. Instead of soaking your chicken in grease, try this instead – dip organic chicken pieces in egg, then roll the chicken in crushed cornflakes or bran flakes, mixed with salt and pepper. Bake in the oven until golden and enjoy!

Your Indiana Food Forest

Your garden can supply an abundance of food – seeds, nuts, fruits and more compromise a “food forest”.   A food forest is a multi-layered composition of food-producing plants.  It is ideally low-maintenance and produces a wealth of edibles.

Want to eat more organic food? A food forest is a great way to do that.

Permaculture design identifies seven layers in a food forest, from the tallest trees in the canopy continuing down below the soil layer.

There are many varieties of plants that are routinely available in Indiana garden centers, including a few examples below.

The Jerusalem artichoke requires between 15 and 55 inches of rain per annum. It is Native to IN.

The Jerusalem artichoke has a Late Summer bloom period. Propogated by Seed, Tubers, the fruit/seed period of the Jerusalem artichoke lasts from Summer to Fall.

Surviving in temperatures above -43°F, the Jerusalem artichoke is in the Aster family. It’s scientific name is Helianthus tuberosus, and it has a High drought tolerance.

While a plant may be listed as fruit-bearing in Indiana, you might not have the best growing conditions in your specific area.

Talking to your local garden supplier is a great way to learn more about the plants, shrubs and ground species that will be the perfect fit for your new food forest.

Are you growing an awesome food forest? Submit a picture and we may feature you on this site.
