Organic Food Growing in Hawaii

Trees, shrubs and ground plants can be combined in a low-maintenance garden settings to produce edible food for the kitchen.  Seeds, nuts, fruits and herbs can be harvested from a multi-layered food forest.

A food forest contributes to a diet with more organic options.

Permaculture design embraces food forests which have horizontal layers such as the canopy and a vertical layer such as vines.

You might find the following plants in a Hawaii food forest. These are all routinely available through many garden suppliers.

The fruit/seed period of the West Indian mahogany runs from Winter to Winter. It si propogated by Container, Cuttings, Seed, Sprigs and has a bloom period in Late Spring.

Known as having a Medium drought tolerance, the West Indian mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni) is in the Mahogany family. It requires a minimum temperature of 40°F.

In areas with an annual rainfall of between 23 and 32 inches, you might find the West Indian mahogany, which is Introduced to HI.

Not every plant species listed as a food forest candidate in Hawaii will thrive in your specific climate or area.

Take a weekend trip to your local garden supply store and learn more about which plants, shrubs and ground cover will be a great fit for your food forest.
