About Fertilizer

Many organic fertilizers are naturally occurring, but it takes work to turn compost into a fertilizer for your garden. You can also buy organic fertilizers that have been carefully made to give your garden the nutrients that it needs.

Your Florida Food Forest

Your garden can supply an abundance of food – seeds, nuts, fruits and more compromise a “food forest”.   A food forest is a multi-layered composition of food-producing plants.  It is ideally low-maintenance and produces a wealth of edibles.

Want to eat more organic food? A food forest is a great way to do that.

Permaculture design identifies seven layers in a food forest, from the tallest trees in the canopy continuing down below the soil layer.

There are many varieties of plants that are routinely available in Florida garden centers, including a few examples below.

The pigeonpea has a Indeterminate bloom period. Propogated by Bare root, Container, Seed, the fruit/seed period of the pigeonpea lasts from Year Round to Year Round.

Surviving in temperatures above 31°F, the pigeonpea is in the Pea family. It’s scientific name is Cajanus cajan, and it has a High drought tolerance.

The pigeonpea requires between 25 and 150 inches of rain per annum. It is Introduced to FL.

While a plant may be listed as fruit-bearing in Florida, you might not have the best growing conditions in your specific area.

Talking to your local garden supplier is a great way to learn more about the plants, shrubs and ground species that will be the perfect fit for your new food forest.
