Organic Food Growing in Delaware

Trees, shrubs and ground plants can be combined in a low-maintenance garden settings to produce edible food for the kitchen.  Seeds, nuts, fruits and herbs can be harvested from a multi-layered food forest.

A food forest contributes to a diet with more organic options.

Permaculture design embraces food forests which have horizontal layers such as the canopy and a vertical layer such as vines.

You might find the following plants in a Delaware food forest. These are all routinely available through many garden suppliers.

In areas with an annual rainfall of between 15 and 55 inches, you might find the Jerusalem artichoke, which is Native to DE.

The fruit/seed period of the Jerusalem artichoke runs from Summer to Fall. It si propogated by Seed, Tubers and has a bloom period in Late Summer.

Known as having a High drought tolerance, the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus) is in the Aster family. It requires a minimum temperature of -43°F.

Not every plant species listed as a food forest candidate in Delaware will thrive in your specific climate or area.

Take a weekend trip to your local garden supply store and learn more about which plants, shrubs and ground cover will be a great fit for your food forest.
