There are many varieties of plants that are routinely available in D.C. garden centers, including a few examples below.
The sassafras requires between 30 and 80 inches of rain per annum. It is Native to DC.
Surviving in temperatures above -27°F, the sassafras is in the Laurel family. It’s scientific name is Sassafras albidum, and it has a High drought tolerance.
The sassafras has a Late Spring bloom period. Propogated by Bare root, Container, Seed, Sprigs, the fruit/seed period of the sassafras lasts from Summer to Summer.
While a plant may be listed as fruit-bearing in D.C., you might not have the best growing conditions in your specific area.
