Organic Food Growing in Connecticut

Trees, shrubs and ground plants can be combined in a low-maintenance garden settings to produce edible food for the kitchen.  Seeds, nuts, fruits and herbs can be harvested from a multi-layered food forest.

A food forest contributes to a diet with more organic options.

Permaculture design embraces food forests which have horizontal layers such as the canopy and a vertical layer such as vines.

You might find the following plants in a Connecticut food forest. These are all routinely available through many garden suppliers.

The fruit/seed period of the Jerusalem artichoke runs from Summer to Fall. It si propogated by Seed, Tubers and has a bloom period in Late Summer.

Known as having a High drought tolerance, the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus) is in the Aster family. It requires a minimum temperature of -43°F.

In areas with an annual rainfall of between 15 and 55 inches, you might find the Jerusalem artichoke, which is Native to CT.

Not every plant species listed as a food forest candidate in Connecticut will thrive in your specific climate or area.

Take a weekend trip to your local garden supply store and learn more about which plants, shrubs and ground cover will be a great fit for your food forest.
