About Chia Seed

Organic chia seeds can be ground in a blender or coffee grinder, into a fine meal. Use this powder as a thickener in the same manner you would use the whole seeds. The ground meal will mix into recipes a bit easier than whole seeds, with all the same nutritional benefits.

Your Connecticut Food Forest

Your garden can supply an abundance of food – seeds, nuts, fruits and more compromise a “food forest”.   A food forest is a multi-layered composition of food-producing plants.  It is ideally low-maintenance and produces a wealth of edibles.

Want to eat more organic food? A food forest is a great way to do that.

Permaculture design identifies seven layers in a food forest, from the tallest trees in the canopy continuing down below the soil layer.

There are many varieties of plants that are routinely available in Connecticut garden centers, including a few examples below.

Surviving in temperatures above -33°F, the lowbush blueberry is in the Heath family. It’s scientific name is Vaccinium angustifolium, and it has a Medium drought tolerance.

The lowbush blueberry has a Early Summer bloom period. Propogated by Bare root, Container, Cuttings, Seed, the fruit/seed period of the lowbush blueberry lasts from Summer to Summer.

The lowbush blueberry requires between 32 and 50 inches of rain per annum. It is Native to CT.

While a plant may be listed as fruit-bearing in Connecticut, you might not have the best growing conditions in your specific area.

Talking to your local garden supplier is a great way to learn more about the plants, shrubs and ground species that will be the perfect fit for your new food forest.
