Permaculture design embraces food forests which have horizontal layers such as the canopy and a vertical layer such as vines.

You might find the following plants in a British Columbia food forest. These are all routinely available through many garden suppliers.

In areas with an annual rainfall of between 8 and 180 inches, you might find the squashberry, which is Native to BC.

Known as having a Low drought tolerance, the squashberry (Viburnum edule) is in the Honeysuckle family. It requires a minimum temperature of -62°F.

The fruit/seed period of the squashberry runs from Summer to Fall. It si propogated by Container, Cuttings, Seed, Sprigs and has a bloom period in Late Spring.

Not every plant species listed as a food forest candidate in British Columbia will thrive in your specific climate or area.

Take a weekend trip to your local garden supply store and learn more about which plants, shrubs and ground cover will be a great fit for your food forest.
