About Probiotics

Are you lactose intolerant? One type of probiotic might help with that! Look for organic Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Lactobacillus casei, which convert lactose into lactic acid, helping you to digest and absorb lactose. Make sure your organic probiotics are from a non-dairy source.

Growing Your Own Alaska Food Forest

A food forest uses available garden space to combine food producing plant species. This multi-layer composition can be low-maintenance, combining trees, shrubs and ground cover in order to produce edible foods including herbs, fruits, seeds and nuts.

This is ideal to increase the amount of organic food in your diet.

An element of permaculture design, the food forest includes seven layers from the canopy down through the rhizosphere.

In Alaska, here are some examples of routinely available plants available at a garden center near you.

Introduced to AK, the chokecherry is common in food forests. It grows in areas with a minimum of 13 inches of annual rainfall.

A member of the Rose family, the common name for Prunus virginiana is chokecherry. Requiring a minimum temperature of -43°F, it has a Medium tolerance of drought.

Propogated by Bare root, Container, Seed, the chokecherry enjoys a bloom period in Mid Spring. the fruit/seed period runs from Summer to Summer.

You may live in a micro-climate or area of Alaska where some species don’t thrive or fruit.

Be sure to consult your neighborhood garden supply store and read more online to find the plants, shrubs and ground cover that work for your food forest.

Want to be featured on our site? Submit a photo of your food forest and tell us what you’re growing!
