Where To Buy Eggs in Alaska

The color of an organic egg is based on the breed of chicken – so a brown egg is not necessarily healthier than a white egg.

About Eggs

The nutrients in an organic egg are shared between the yolk and white, so recipes and cooking techniques calling for the whole egg will allow you to make the most of this nutritional food. More fat is found in the egg yolk versus the white, but the yolk also contains sulfur, which is critical to proper use of good cholesterol.

Grow a Food Forest in Alaska

A food forest is a multi-layered composition of food producing plant species. Implemented properly, a food forest is a low maintenance garden that combines trees, shrubs and ground plants to produce useful and edible food like fruits, seeds, nuts and herbs.

This is a great way to eat more organic food in your daily life.

A food forest is a permaculture design element consisting of seven layers from the canopy and shrubs on down past the soil layer.

Following are some options for your Alaska food forest. All of these plants are routinely available in areas where they thrive.

The common wheat (Triticum aestivum) is in the Grass family. It’s drought tolerance is Medium and requires a minimum temperature of -28°F.

The common wheat is Introduced to AK. It requires precipitation between 10 and 100 inches of rain annually.

The common wheat is propogated by Seed. With a bloom period in Early Spring, the fruit/seed period begins in Spring and ends in Summer.

While a plant species may generally thrive and fruit in Alaska, you may be in a climate that isn’t optimal.

Consult your local garden supplier or continue researching in order to find plants, shrubs and ground cover that match your specific hardiness zone, rainfall and direct sun.

We hope you enjoy creating your food forest! Submit a picture and your garden could be featured on this site!

Eggs Info

Some organic farmers feed their chickens flax seed or other foods high in omega 3 fatty acids, making their eggs higher in omega 3s as well.
