Organic Food Growing in Alberta

Trees, shrubs and ground plants can be combined in a low-maintenance garden settings to produce edible food for the kitchen.  Seeds, nuts, fruits and herbs can be harvested from a multi-layered food forest.

A food forest contributes to a diet with more organic options.

Permaculture design embraces food forests which have horizontal layers such as the canopy and a vertical layer such as vines.

You might find the following plants in a Alberta food forest. These are all routinely available through many garden suppliers.

Known as having a Low drought tolerance, the lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) is in the Heath family. It requires a minimum temperature of -62°F.

In areas with an annual rainfall of between 10 and 276 inches, you might find the lingonberry, which is Native to AB.

The fruit/seed period of the lingonberry runs from Summer to Fall. It si propogated by Bare root, Container, Cuttings, Seed, Sprigs and has a bloom period in Summer.

Not every plant species listed as a food forest candidate in Alberta will thrive in your specific climate or area.
