You might find the following plants in a South Dakota food forest. These are all routinely available through many garden suppliers.
The fruit/seed period of the sawtooth sunflower runs from Summer to Fall. It si propogated by Bare root, Container, Seed and has a bloom period in Late Summer.
Known as having a Medium drought tolerance, the sawtooth sunflower (Helianthus grosseserratus) is in the Aster family. It requires a minimum temperature of -43°F.
In areas with an annual rainfall of between 20 and 40 inches, you might find the sawtooth sunflower, which is Native to SD.
Not every plant species listed as a food forest candidate in South Dakota will thrive in your specific climate or area.
Take a weekend trip to your local garden supply store and learn more about which plants, shrubs and ground cover will be a great fit for your food forest.
