Can I Grow Organic Food in Erie County?

Your garden can supply an abundance of food – seeds, nuts, fruits and more compromise a “food forest”.   A food forest is a multi-layered composition of food-producing plants.  It is ideally low-maintenance and produces a wealth of edibles.

Want to eat more organic food? A food forest is a great way to do that.

Permaculture design identifies seven layers in a food forest, from the tallest trees in the canopy continuing down below the soil layer.

There are many varieties of plants that are routinely available in New York garden centers, including a few examples below.

The beaked hazelnut requires between 20 and 80 inches of rain per annum. It is Native to NY.

Surviving in temperatures above -47°F, the beaked hazelnut is in the Birch family. It’s scientific name is Corylus cornuta, and it has a Medium drought tolerance.

The beaked hazelnut has a Early Spring bloom period. Propogated by Bare root, Container, Seed, the fruit/seed period of the beaked hazelnut lasts from Summer to Fall.

While a plant may be listed as fruit-bearing in New York, you might not have the best growing conditions in your specific area.

Talking to your local garden supplier is a great way to learn more about the plants, shrubs and ground species that will be the perfect fit for your new food forest.
