The bitternut hickory (Carya cordiformis) is in the Walnut family. It’s drought tolerance is High and requires a minimum temperature of -47°F.
The bitternut hickory is Native to NC. It requires precipitation between 25 and 70 inches of rain annually.
The bitternut hickory is propogated by Bare root, Container, Seed. With a bloom period in Mid Spring, the fruit/seed period begins in Summer and ends in Fall.
While a plant species may generally thrive and fruit in North Carolina, you may be in a climate that isn’t optimal.
Consult your local garden supplier or continue researching in order to find plants, shrubs and ground cover that match your specific hardiness zone, rainfall and direct sun.
